Missed callback on missed years NI contributions in 2025
I missed my callbacks in 2025 regarding the missed NI contributions which I didn't pay when working as a teacher in Spain between 2001 and 2009. I registered on line in March 2025 when it was all over the news. I just called DWP to see if they could look into it and they said the manager would have to look to see if they had called me. They will get back to me. What are my options? I am 51 but would like to retire from my main job early. I am certain I paid into the state Spanish pension when I was teaching, does this count?

Paying into the Spanish pension will count towards any pension due from that country. It will not add to your UK pension but can be used for aggregating any minimum qualification periods - in the same way your UK pension will be used against any minimum qualification for that pension.
Have you checked your current forecast to confirm if those years will actually make a difference ?

Thank you for your reply molerat. I currently have to work 9 more years to receive the full amount so 60 years old. I was hoping to retire at 55 so I will be 4 years down.
I am not quite sure what what you mean about the minimum qualification period.

In the UK you need a minimum of 10 years to get any pension. If you only have 3 you get nothing but if you worked in Spain for 7 years that 7 + 3 = 10 so you would get that 3 years worth of pension. I don't know what the minimum is for Spain but it will work in the same way under the EU treaty.

Thank you that's something at least. Potentially I can have 3 years for my time in Spain which means I will only be 1 year down if I stop working at 55. DWP are calling me back over the next few days so I will bring this up. Many thanks Molerat

Have you checked your state pension forecast?
What does it say?
I currently have to work 9 more years to receive the full amount so 60 years old. I was hoping to retire at 55 so I will be 4 years down.
You can continue to pay voluntary NI even if you're not working. If you're 51 and your forecast says you need nine more years for a full state pension, you've got plenty of time to get those nine years before you reach state pension age.

It says Forecast if you contribute another 9 years before April 2042 £241.30
Thank you that's very helpful re voluntary payments

In Spain you need 15 years to qualify for a pension and 2 years in your final 15 years must be contribution years. Whether some or all of those 2 and 15 years are direct contribution periods in Spain, or UK weeks (UK NI years are on of no relevance here as Spain simply works in days across the calendar year) through aggregation.
If you have about 38 years through aggregation (I forget the exact numbers as they are increasing as they are in the UK), then you can retire early on a reduced amount.
