Everywhere I've worked has had formal training requirements which YouTube videos couldn't possibly deliver. In one case, a 6 week training academy was required before a further 4 weeks of 1-2-1 mentoring from an experienced colleague. Another required 6 months of live-in training college attendance followed by 12 months as a probationer under the close supervision of a senior colleague. Some of the training involved practical elements which had to be assessed by the appropriately qualified assessor and failing any part of the training meant failing it all. Not every occupation is suited to video tutorials. I don't want my surgeon to have sat through a couple of videos before picking up a scalpel. I want my wounds dressed by a nurse with practical, assessed skills. I want my Police officers to have a range of skills that can only be gained on the job. My firefighters to have extensive, practical health and safety training, not to mention practical lifting and handling training. And on it goes.

Video tutorials have their place as I think most employers would agree and in my experience they are used where appropriate to deliver one-way training in straightforward subjects but they are not suitable in every situation and hardly ever a substitute for in-person training delivered by a subject matter expert.

    U-Tube is open to all.

If a company want to make a How To video for such as what you do. Then it has to be in house & on a secure server.

This is how all our in house learning & compliance modules are done. Certainly not anything that public should have access too.

Learning video is alongside hands on training & written to allow ALL learning types to get best training.

    Life in the slow lane
  • Firstly, it's YouTube.

    Secondly, it's not "open-to-all"
It's very easy to lock videos down, only make them available via a private link or even to individual users.

It can be super locked-down too. As much as any other cloud storage.

There's even YouTube videos about how to do it!

Again not work but at a very bad period for me last year I came home after leaving my OH in hospital at 1am and all my lights have fused I only actually knew what to do if one lot alone had gone out. We'd had a new box installed some months earlier and I used a Youtube tutorial, stopping and starting it to show exactly how to do a full reset , stopping and starting the video as I did and checked each set holding a torch in my teeth as it was pitch black and my fuse box is in the back of a cupboard under the stairs.

I'm also waiting for delivery on a new car and have already bookmarked a couple of Youtube videos showing some of the things to do with the screen system and linking my music and such like.
