is there a way to tame the dust?

Nahh! you're not slummy - just practical! Remember Quentin Crisp? One of his many sayings was that dust doesn't get any worse after the first three months!
I'd just hoover up as much as possible but save the intensive cleaning until after its all settled.
I would concentrate more on trying to give all your appliances like the microwave, tv etc a really good hoover out at the back, especially near any ventilation holes - after our building work was completed lots of our appliances went "pop" through overheating because they were loaded with dust inside.:heartpuls The best things in life aren't things :heartpuls

Thanks both....well the hoover doesn't work anyway (may be something to do with the quality of our hoover and the amount of dog hair and building dust it's already sucked up! We're going to treat ourselves to a new one once all this is finished.
Sadly....it's too late to put things away before the start and I'm struggling to find space that isn't already rammed with the rest of our stuff as until the extension is built the shed and the caravan are full of the contents from the house the we moved out of....
I think a wet cloth might be the only option....big sigh....
See you some time (much) later.....Piglet

He said four years, actually - and I can personally vouch for that being true!
I am just contemplating my own attack of builders' dust. I think I'm going for dustpan & brush, followed by vacuum cleaner, followed by damp dusting. Busy afternoon ahead. If we are supposed to be thin, why does chocolate exist?0 -
I have a 'Henry' and he has coped heroically with vast amounts of builders dust - we've had loads of work done. Our builders also have a Henry and cleared up at the end of each day.
The dust still seems to be settling and the 'big' things finished 2 years ago!0 -
Sorry charlies aunt I posted at the same time as you. That's good advice about the vents, I'll see what I can do today but will bear it in mind for when we've finished.
We had a Henry years ago when we had a restaurant and it was a great cleaner, I think they are so simple that they cope with most things. We've got a second hand dyson at the moment and we only got it because my Aunt wasn't happy with it and was off loading it but it's pretty poor.
Thinking about our cylinder cleaner is in the shed, I might dig that out and see if it's any better.
I'm just going for a surface clean with a wet cloth. Dad has been away for a few weeks and is due back this week and I'd just like the place not to look quite so awful when he returns. It's his house we've taken over and his "grandpa" annexe on the side....Piglet

Would it be possible to fill the gap under the door to stop the dust getting in?
If your not there in the week can you block the gap when your not there, or do the builders need that access?
if there are unused cupboards try using bin bags stuck to the worktop and then the plinths at bottom of cupboard with gaffer tape to stop the bulk of the dust getting in. Also see if you can seal the door up from the kitchen to the rest of the house as this will help contain the worst in one area.0
