MSE Forum Poll: What kind of receipt do you prefer from shops?

Whether you're buying some new clothes, a snazzy gadget or just picking up a pint of milk, there's a good chance you'll be asked one familiar question at the till: "Would you like your receipt?"

Some people still prefer a paper receipt they can tuck into a wallet or folder, while others are happy with a digital version sent by email or appearing in an app. And of course, some would rather skip the receipt altogether unless they think they might need it later.

I'm younger (22) and would prefer a paper reciept, it annoys me in HMV where you have to put your email into their system for a receipt.

A paper receipt is always my preferred option because if you need to return an item the retailer invariably asks 'do you have the receipt?' You'd be amazed how many times I've been charged full price for something that was supposed to be on offer at the supermarket. Far easier to have the proof in black and white when you go to customer services.

Anything but email. I'm tired of having to spell out my name just to buy something. Just add a receipts function to loyalty card apps and always give paper as an option.

Handing over your email address or phone number for a receipt just means you'll get a steady diet of spam along with your receipt. Paper for me every time.

The app is the best in my opinion, love that the Lidl app makes receipts available there. I hope all find a way to make it a thing.

Paper ones somehow somewhere get lost, I def prefer emails

Anyone handing over personal data such as email addresses for receipts should set up a separate email address for this purpose. That way, when the inevitable spam arrives you can dump the address if it becomes a nuisance.
You should also be aware that the data is being used for actively market profiling of you (e.g. linking it to other purchases by you), and you should also be alert to the possibility that your data may be being sold to a broker for onward use by others.
