Self assessment whole pounds or pounds and pence

In my case I had been manually preparing tax returns ( for trusts) as a professional since age 19.
When professional software for that task became a thing years later, that is what I became accustomed to using.
Once it became necessary to regularly prepare my own personal returns 14 years ago, I naturally sought out suitable software packages for that purpose so it never occurred to me to even look at HMRCs system geared to the general public.
Income is no longer overly complicated. For a time there was professional partnership income but now confined to dividends, interest, rents and more recently state pension.
However for me the modest cost of the software together with the useful technical support provided, is such that I cannot imagine not using it for the foreseeable. A relative with a similar income profile plus a DB pension uses an accountant for his filings and that of his wife.

Fair enough - conversely I started using the HMRC system when launched and it never occurred to me to pay for something else!

I paid for the first one, especially as only had 3 months to complete. I was surprised at the cost as I thought it should have been straight forward for a professional. I only had occupational and state pension, savings interest and dividends.
Cost was an eye watering amount. Perhaps I'm out of touch with charges these days.
Couldn't find any information on reasonably priced software.
Now working out how to do it myself, hence all my questions

I wouldn't have thought to look at the instructions for paper submission for guidance on rounding for online submission via HMRC portal

An article covering some of the tax software for DIY filers. I think Andica maybe the cheapest at around £20 plus vat but I don't know about its functionality.
I use GoSimple , but that has jumped to £70 or £34.99 if you are a Which member.

No point wasting money if your tax affairs are simple. Just continue coming on here and ask all the questions you need. You don't have to complete it all at once, it will just save what you have done if you want to exit before submitting. Once you have submitted your first one it will get easier and less worrying with subsequent years.

Thanks. I have started but need to go back and round amounts entered as advised here.

I haven't used it for several years now but my recollection is that the HMRC facility automatically does that for you, either within the data entry pages themselves or maybe just at the end when you trigger the calculation?

When I did my self assessment direct with HMRC last year the values were rounded automatically as I entered each field

Just been back into my self assessment and the values have been rounded by the system. I hadn't gone back after I saved and moved to the next page, hence my original question. Rounding may only occur on saving the page.
