Changes to Youtube monetisation requirements
So YouTube have announced on their blog that they are changing the monetisation requirements for ad revenue in the Youtube Partner Programme:
Before Feb 2027 | After Feb 2027 | |
|---|---|---|
'Qualified' public watch hours on long-form content in the last 12 months | 4,000 | 8,000 |
'Qualified' shorts views in the last 90 days | 10,000,000 | 20,000,000 |
On the face of it this appears to hit Shorts creators harder. Feedback on the Youtuber Reddits seems mixed, some are really concerned and some are taking about how you wouldn't get that much under the old threshold anyway, as well as more negative "get a real job" type comments especially in more viewer-centric groups.
I'm posting on a very small channel and I'm not wildly concerned about it - if I ever did 'make it' my RPM would probably not be high enough to be worried about the revenue from a channel which had only made it to 4k watch hours (but admittedly I am guessing).
This change doesn't impact the first tier of the partnership programme (this is for things like donations or memberships).
Anyway I hope this is of interest. What do you think?

It's very hard to achieve 4000 hours, how some people manage to achieve 8000 hours, I have no idea. It takes a year or so to get there, with good, consistently posted content.. Ad monetisation means only that creatore gets paid for mout above watched hours, so it can be £50 per moth or so. It looks like too many people around the world started their channels and got to the point getting paid for it, so let's smash them. A bit sad, but that's the way it is.
