Decent set of bathroom scales

We're fed up with our cheap electronic bathroom scales (which never give the same reading twice) and want to buy a decent set of mechanical scales. However, we can find no information on how stable or accurate any particular set is. Looking around the shops, everyone seems to stock Salter and EKS and very little else. There's nothing about accuracy or stability on the packaging and from what I can tell, a £10 set of Salter scales uses the same dial (and who knows, probably the same mechanism?) as a £30 set.

Any recommendations?

I know one key thing with scales is to have them on a firm surface (ie not carpet) and ideally not move them around. I don't know if that would help with your current scales, at least at the moment you can take several readings and choose the best, whereas our electronic scales used on a carpet and moved slightly every time I use them give consistently bad news. I've tried leaping on and off a few times but it doesn't help. :(

  • A tape measure would be cheaper and more reliable.

Have a look at the following article -

which suggests a tape measure could be a more accuarate way of keeping tabs on your health and size.
