I emailed the talktous inbox for arriva and they confirmed that I could claim the refund from the bank and that this would cancel my rolling subscription so I would just need to sign up again for September. Bit of a faff but it should get sorted now. I still think it's unfair on anyone who has paid and is unaware of the free travel though.

You could also speak to your bank about this as you are arguably paying for a service that you are not receiving, they may offer to progress this issue on your behalf and discuss it with Arriva.
