How much debt is it? Could your husband help you out with it? When did you come out of your previous DMP? Was he aware of that?

Having one partner looking to take on additional debt, while the other is struggling can put a strain on relationships. If you are able to it would be best to work together on it.

Don't rush into the DMP, there are plenty of knowledgeable people on this board who can help you through this situation.

Current minimum payments are £817 over four loans and a credit card.StepChange have said monthly DMP payment would be £537 allowing for a realistic budget to live on.

That is a pretty big gap to try to fill with cutting back. Especially if you do not want your partner to notice.a big change and ask why.

But do any of your loans end soon? And is the credit card on 0% interest?

Please read that back to yourself, aloud. And listen.

This is going to be tough love.

You have the lower income, spent money trying to keep with a husband who criticises you for spending, but still expects your to spend more than you can afford. And you think you didn't have a good financial education?

Your husband is not great at relationships and fails totally in financial nous

Even if you weren't married, the basic of couples' finance where there is a disparity in income is that you need to discuss and adjust the financial contributions, or adjust expenditure so you can both afford your share of the costs. Not like the guy whose wife was here in mental and financial extremis because he expected her to contribute 50% of the household costs on mat pay whilst caring for their first child.

You aren't useless financially if you are being criticised and lectured, you are in a problematic relationship where your spouse has little respect and no clue on how to manage finances as a partner. He's not the bee's knees, he's a problem.

He may just be clueless, but you can't afford financially or personally to attach your flag to this mast unless he changes. You are going to need to learn to assert yourself as well.

It's not going to be solved overnight. The fact that you've 4 loans suggests you've tried consolidating and it hasn't helped?

I'd suggest full SOAs for you as a couple and yourself, detailing your debts by provider, APR, end of deal or loan. That'll help people understand your finances, look at options and maybe advise. Be prepared for the fact that there will be more than one option and you need to explore each before choosing what to do.

I'd also recommend that before making the final decision you talk to your husband. You don't have to do what he wants, but you will do better if he doesn't hinder you by design or accident.

It's going to be a learning curve but it'll help you avoid further issues.

If you've have not made a mistake, you've made nothing
