Guitar shaped birthday cake

Hiya
I wondered if anyone could help me. I want to make a guitar shaped birthday cake for my OH's birthday in Feb. I've been quoted £68 so I am so not going there! I think it should be easy (ish) to do with a bit of imagination and i've found a couple of websites but I wondered if anyone on here had any ideas or experience. I'm thinking liquorish laces for the strings and two circles and a rectangle cake shaped a bit for the body of the guitar. Any better ideas?
Thanks in advance xx

Do you live near a cake decorating shop which hires cake tins? Wilton do a guitar shaped tin (scroll down a bit) and this kind of tin often hired out by shops. They're not that expensive to hire, or you can also pick them up from ebay - that's not the cheapest option but it'll still be a lot less than sixty-odd pounds!! If you do use this kind of tin, I'd really recommend trying to get hold of some 'cake release' - it's stuff that's sold especially for odd shaped tins and makes getting the cake out soooo much easier, which is handy for odd shaped things like these.

You can decorate these simply, by getting a small star nozzle and piping litte 'stars' of buttercream directly onto the sponge - it is time consuming but it's a lot easier than trying to cover the cake with ready-roll icing, and you get a really good looking cake even if you're not a fantastic cake decorator. These novelty tins often come with a picture to show how the cake should look, which is always helpful! Then you could still use the liquorice as strings (or even *carefully* piped royal icing) and you'd be able to customise the colours etc to suit :)

I did this for my son many years ago.

Used 2 round ones shaped to make the fat bit ( bit like a figure of eight) and an oblong one cut lengthways for the neck and bits left over made the end bit...sorry dont know the correct terms!

covered it in icing, liquorice for strings, moulded coloured icing for the bit that they go into on the fat body...good my descriptions good tonight..not:rolleyes:
and coctail sticks with knob shaped bits of pineapple on them for the 6 knobs at the other end...did try other things for that, but the pineapple looked the best. I am sure someone can improve on that.

I really enjoyed making birthday cakes when the kids were young, have fun:D

Thanks to both of you for your replies. I'd seen the Wilton cake tin but was worried about it coming out of the tin ok. I'd read on the same site about the cake release 'stuff' so to have it recommended is great. I've a friend who also wants to make a guitar cake for her son so think we'll go halves on the tin. Thanks again xx

I made a violin shaped one once for my sis - I just made a big rectangle one, then sliced a couple of inches down the long side to use for the neck. For the body I printed out a violin shape and cut round it for the shape. Butter creamed the whole lot then piped lines down for the strings, the bridge and the f holes.
  • Get a cake pan from ebay its cheaper with the exchange rate to get one sent from the US, get tin slip of you can get it, seems better than cake release, if I can find the recipe theres a homemade version!
