American cloth

back in the age of the dinosaurs my mum used to put what she called American cloth on the top of the wall cupboards in the kitchen. Then once a year she would pull it off and wipe off all the grease etc that had accumulated and put it back, the top of the cupboards thus stayed clean and grease free.

I’m going to do up my kitchen and I thought I’d do the same. Any suggestions as to what the modern equivalent of American cloth is? Google says American cloth is oilcloth, but I assume that that is quite expensive and that there is something equivalent in modern material that would do the same job. Also I have no idea where I would buy such a thing.

I thought about pvc type tablecloths but I think that might be too lightweight to stay in place.

This site seems to do cut to size with most at £18.99 a metre, but there are a couple of sale options at £12.50 a metre - as it's on top of the cupboard and you won't see it, this is what I'd opt for.

Not quite the same but my folks used newspapers as easier to chuck/replace/use as firelighters when changing over. Else I'd get a decent weight pvc style tablecloth and cut to size

We use lining paper, plain enough that it can also be used inside cupboards too.

You can pick up odd rolls of vinyl wallpaper at charity shops sometimes which can be cut to size and either wiped over or thrown away once dirty,

Cheap pvc table cloths work as well and can be folded to size.

Buying off the roll is more expensive

Dunelm sell PVC tablecloth 'material' on the roll… as cheap as £4 a metre for 1.4m width. Most places like The Range stock PVC tablecloth/protectors that can also be cut down to the size(s) required. Won't be as durable as proper oilcloth but that's not needed for this application…

Wallpaper lining paper then just throw away. Cheap.

The local market sells pvc by the metre. Dunelm has it 140 cm wide, at £4 a metre.

You can get wallpaper sample books free. I wonder if pvc or kitchen vinyl sample books are available free.
