MSE Forum poll: How often do you ask for a 'doggy bag' for your leftovers at a restaurant?

Whether it's to cut down on food waste, get better value for money, or enjoy tomorrow's lunch, taking leftovers home after a meal out can be a smart move. Yet plenty of people still feel a bit awkward about asking for a doggy bag.

When you're eating at a restaurant and don't finish your meal, how often do you ask to take the leftovers home?

Decent restaurants round our way often ask if you want to take away any leftovers.

I'll usually try to remember a small ziplock bag in any case.

Not something I'd be doing in very posh or chains.

Have done in the past when the steaks were huge and the portions too.

I do keep a food bag about me for all sorts but will put half a slice of cake in as again, around here they serve huge slices and not cheap because of the size.

I find that restaurants will take it as a compliment that you don't want them to throw the food away. Nothing to feel awkward about at all.

I always have a poo bag in my back pocket, that is big enough for meat leftovers.

I try to avoid ordering food I won't be able eat in restaurants, avoiding the need for a doggy bag, and saving money.

If somewhere advises X number of sides to share, between 2 I at least halve that number when ordering - for example if they recommend 3, we have one. If they recommend 4 or 6 two.

I think restaurants are starting to accept that more and more folk are taking Mounjaro, which means you feel full very quickly, but still enjoy a lovely meal. I’ve been given my leftovers in takeaway type containers a couple of times.

Even better if you take your own tub, less going to landfill on two counts.

The Chinese Buffet restaurant will charge a waste fee if people take more than they can eat and leave it. People pile their plate with some of everything, like a waste bin, and then it goes cold and unappetising. It is better to enjoy the wonderful taste of the food in several small courses.

The carvery has adult and child portions and my growing grandson is happy to swap.

I ask for a doggy bag if a set meal is too much.

I always ask for any meat left on my plate. And the restaurant where we go regularly, will even provide a container.

As a gymrat, there's not enough food you can serve me that I won't gobble down 😆 😆
