Looking for advice on buying my first drawing tablet. How should I choose one?

I’m looking to get my first drawing tablet for digital art and I’m a complete beginner.

I’ve been looking at different models, but I’m a bit confused about which specifications actually matter in real use.

I’ve seen cheaper alternatives from brands like Huion, XP-Pen and others, but I’m not sure how much difference there really is compared with more expensive brands.

For someone just starting out, what features should I focus on, and what would you recommend?

I'm interested in the answers you get. Like you I'd like to have a go at digital art but as a beginner don't want to spend a fortune, but do want one that will allow me to produce a good result. I will happily upgrade later if I really take to it.

Which tablet you use is less important than the software and your own skills. See what you can get second-hand or refurbed. I'm still using an old Wacom from 20 years ago. Modern versions have pressure-sensitive styli and let you draw straight onto the screen, but you get used to what you've got. You can always download brush textures and stuff as you need them.

Focus on making sure everything in your setup is compatible with the rest. As long as that's true you're sorted.

Have two sizes of the old Wacom One/Inus which are ok but both have just been gathering dust since having iPad with Apple Pencil plus a "paper like" screen cover.

Would echo of ensuring your tablet and software play nicely with each other as not all do. It takes a lot of getting used to using a traditional drawing tablet -v- using something like an ipad where you are drawing where the drawing is.
