Trying to pay tax (employed)

Backstory - I am employed by the NHS and in my first month they did not deduct any tax from my payslip. I contacted payroll and they basically said "nothing we can do; contact HMRC yourself".

I can't get through on the phone. The digital assistant does not return any queries relating to my scenario. What do I do? I am trying to pay them over £400 in tax that I owe, but am physically unable to do it. I get letters through the post relating to self-assessment, but I thought that was only if you were self-employed???

What tax code did they use on the pay slip ?

What did you indicate on the new start paperwork ?

What does your on line tax account show for this employment ?

Were you employed earlier in this tax year ?

It should work like this - new employer applies tax code according to your selection on the new starter form / P45. They then submit your pay to HMRC under RTR. HMRC then provide employer with tax code for future use. There is not normally any need to contact HMRC as it usually just works.

Tax code is 1257L CUMUL. They've taken it out fine for the last 3 months but still I owe for March. They were supposed to put in my normal code (as I went NHS to NHS) but they didn't. I've never seen my online tax account so will have a look now

March is last tax year so there is nothing anyone can do until HMRC reconcile your 25-26 account around October when they will likely adjust your current code to collect any owed tax. You may then have the option to pay it as a lump sum if you so wish.

Thank you. I'll wait until then. I did manage to get through to them the other week and they said I'd get a letter "at some point". So maybe this is what they meant
