Self assessment

yes 2nd July is the 3 month deadline for a 24/25 return required as a result of a notice to file dated 2 April 26.
as others say, get a certificate of posting as HMRC are well known for having monumental backlogs in opening post sent to them, so they may not have recorded they received it by the deadline. Do not send it "signed for" as that is also known to introduce definite delays at HMRC1 -
Posted the form out on Tuesday.
Have now received the activation code for self assessment in the post. Given likely delays for them to process the postal form, could I also submit online now just to speed things up? Or is this likely to make them think we've submitted late (I guess if they impose a penalty I can explain we've done it on time via post for a belt and braces approach so they cancel it)…
Advantage of doing it online is I know it's been received, I can get them to confirm no tax due, and there's no risk they come back in a few months time to say they haven't received anything and we owe them penalties for missing multiple deadlines.
Thoughts?

Seeing as today is after the 2nd July deadline why would you now want to file online which would incur a late filing penalty?
Just hope the paper return was received on or before 2nd July.

For the reasons set out above, i.e.
- Peace of mind that it's done and confirmation we owe no tax (if we do we are incurring late payment interest/penalties for the time it takes them to process the form)
- Avoid the risk it's got 'lost in the post' and we don't find out for several months by which time we owe £100s in late filing penalties
But I don't want to do this if doing so will somehow overwrite the fact we did post the form in time. If they do try and charge us £100 would it be cancelled if we explain they've already had the form within the 3 month period required?

Haven't we already established there is no tax to pay?
You are just creating more work by filing online late. All of which coukd have been avoided if you hadn't left things ao late.

There was me impressed with myself not leaving it to the last minute but completing it with a few days to spare! Just got tripped up by HMRC imposing a 7 day delay in the process to file online for the first time.
But, I'll take the hint and not look to file online as a supplementary measure.
