doing 3 hours work and they want my UTR
I'm doing some work for a school soon, over the course of an afternoon, and they want my UTR on the invoice. I'm not self employed. But I do have a UTR.
It's only for a modest amount, should I let them have it? Never been asked for it before. Is it just a box ticking procedure or does it get added to my "file" or whatever it is?

How are you working for them? If you're invoicing them then that suggests you aren't an employee. So you probably are self employed

I am working for them in a self employed capacity although I'm not registered as s/e with HMRC, I have another PAYE regular job

How much is "modest"?
Do you expect to have other self-employed income this tax year?

Now and then- I guess it would end up being over £1000 in total too

So you are self-employed. You only need to register as self-employed if your self-employed income is >£1k pa
its is standard practice that a client askes for your UTR in order to keep their finance people happy that you are genuinely self-employed and paying your own tax and that HMRC aren't going to knock on their door saying your actually an employee & demanding they pay tax & NI

OP, it would be beneficial if you could tell the rest of us what UTR means 🙄

UTR means Unique Tax Reference. Usually, you only get issued with one if you fill in a tax return.

I know this has been answered but I thought I’d add, I’m self employed and recently undertook a one off piece of work as a favour and had to give my UTR. That allows the income to be returned to HMRC and in my case added added to my income from other similar work that forms my main self employment ‘business’ when I submit my accounts.

Except having a UTR doesn't prove you are self employed. It only shows you have registered with HMRC for self assessment.
