Chickpeas and butter beans without sulphates

Hi

Im keen to eat more chickpeas and butter beans etc but disappointed that many supermarket own brands have sulphates in.

I know ktc branded stuff doesn’t nor does Sainsburys organic but wondered what people have found ? Ideally cheap own brand if possible!

With a bit of foresight it's easy enough to rehydrate/cook dried chickpeas etc.

TBH, probably not that much cheaper than tins unless you buy in serious bulk but no additives (& no tin).

Mr Organic chickpeas are great, but a bit pricy. I often get Village Chickpeas (in a jar) from Sainsburys, which aren't quite as good but they are half the price! They are both free from sulphates I think.

Essential Waitrose don't and they are only 55p per can.

Out of interest, any reason why?

Also do you mean sulphites, which are typically used as food/drink preservatives, instead of sulphates which are typically used in washing/cleaning products?

Tesco's chickpeas contain a preservative, but ascorbic acid (the preservative of choice) is not a sulphite. The same with Waitrose.

Sainsburys, Asda and M&S do use a sulphite based preservative.

The KTC branded one you mentioned instead uses salt as the preservative, which while not a sulphite, carries its own risks.

    Know what you don't

Sorry yes I meant sulphites. I’d prefer just no preservatives ie pure natural. I’d assumed the salt was ok but fair point! Anyone know what Lidl and Aldi do ?

OP - I shared your dilemma not so long ago. Whilst you can't beat the convenience of tinned pulses they are now actually very pricey compared with DIY. I will commend this thread to you, I am now a convert in middle age after not being in the habit of cooking meals (cakes and the occasional stockpot of soup or curry were about how much effort I would put into it prior):

I bought the Pressure King Pro (Drew & Cole's answer to the IP).

I'm not going to lie, there is a big drawback and that is much as I would have liked to have used it this past week I have not, because its been so ridiculously hot, I see this as an opportunity to run down my stash of HM meals in the freezer, which include my favourite Tuscan Marry Me Beans.

No man is worth crawling on this earth.

So much to read, so little time.

Funnily enough I've got a bowl of cooked chick peas awaiting me getting up the energy to make hummus.

I cooked them yesterday using free solar power of which I've had a lot these last few days! The heat is putting me off doing too much so when a friend came round last night with two rib eye steaks we cooked them on my portable induction stove on the garden table and I left the chick peas until today.

You can cook more than you need and then freeze them as well if you want to do a bit of advanced planning. Another recommendation are the cans of 5 bean salad in vinaigrette in Aldi for not much which you can then titivate up with nice olive oil and herbs for a hot weather little effort offering.
