Would there not be an argument to say that, even if the Band D was correct in 1998, it is no longer correct in 2026?
No.
Economic changes (for that is what they are) cannot be taken into account.

No, it doesn't work like that. If it was correct in 1998, it is correct now. If they used your logic, then there's huge parts of the south east of the country who would have significant increases in their council tax bandings.
There might have an argument that all those currently banded C in your locality are wrong, and should be banded D. But, no-one would ever suggest putting that forward.

How do I challenge my councill tax? I have done this with gov website they say no difference. I live in a semi joined to my neighbour mirror image houses absolutley no differece yet I pay a higher council tax. There are only us two semi detached on street. I cant get anyone to understand they are identical
I have been paying a higher band for over 20yrs
I dont kniw were to turn, even my mp is not interested. Please help

The other alternative is that your neighbour is paying too low a band

If you have challenged the band by contacting the VOA and asking for a band review, which was unsuccessful and your MP will not help, basically there's nothing else you can do. As a previous poster has suggested, it could be that next door is too low

How do I even start to challenge when all the house bungalows, small properties big mansions are all on the same tax band in the street ? Its absurd . They cant all be in the right band. If I cant use neighbours to compare who do I use?
