Retrospective Marriage Allowance
My wife (non-tax-payer) recently completed a MATCF to gift her marriage allowance to me, not just for 2026-27 but also for retrospective tax years including 2025-26.
The MATCF is still pending and her tax calculation for 2025-26 has just been processed (it would not have been impacted had the marriage allowance been gifted at this point). My calculation is still pending.
I’m a bit confused as to how it will be applied:
- for 2025-26 – will my tax calculation use the gifted allowance, assuming the MATCF is processed first? If not, how will I receive the refund?
- for earlier tax years which are done & dusted? Would HMRC issue a one-off refund payment?
Thanks

- You don't get an increased allowance, it's a tax reduction worth £252 (assuming you were liable to £252 in tax). If 2025/2- is reviewed first then it will be reviewed a second time once Marriage Allowance is on place.
2. Normally yes, you will get calculations showing any tax overpaid and a refund of the total refund. And your wife will get the same if she has any tax to pay for any of the years involved.

So what about us singletons then??

Get married. Think of all the tax you could save!
Oh and adopt a child while you are at it - just for the house.

The money/assets that would disappear on divorce makes the extra tax burden ( whilst alive) more than palatable, and I would be very concerned for any child's sanity if adopted by me 😀

You're effectively wanting the marriage allowance to be multiplied by ten? Dream on!
