As everyone else has said, anchovies aren't really intended as a main protein in a meal. They're usually added sparingly for flavour.

I'm a fan of tinned sardines, mackerel and pilchards.

It helps that I like (prefer, even) them in tomato sauce rather than oil or water!

If you want to get some benefit, you can use them as seasoning as they pretty much melt when cooked. Adding one to a pasta sauce is great, as long as you don't add any more salt...you get nicely seasoned food and some omega 3s and oils into the bargain.

Only thing I do with them is on top of sliced tomatoes on toasted bread. I saw it on the cookery slot on Steph's Packed Lunch.

As other posters have said tinned anchovies are better used as a flavouring rather than as the protein in a meal.

We use them most often in Spaghetti Puttanesca, where a small 50g tin flavours enough sauce for six to eight servings, so salt content per portion is manageable.It is one of the cheapest dishes we make especially if tomatoes are getting past their best.
