Backdated State Pension

Does anyone know how far back State Pensions can be backdated? In this case the person was receiving Pension Credit but was not aware they were not in receipt of their State Pension.

From what I can see it is 12 months.

If they failed to respond to the invitation to claim their SP that should have been sent to the a few months before they reached State Pension Age now, then the pension is treated as deferred.

When they claim then they can get a backdated lump sum for up to twelve months and/or an increased State Pension amount.

I presume that the Pension Credit calculation will have been done assuming that the SP is being claimed

How much PC were they getting?

Just to add - we all appear to be referring to the potential claimant in the past tense - are they still alive ?

If not, then I'm not sure there will be any possibility of the estate retrospectively claiming the SP now.

Be careful about applying to backdate the SP as this may invalidate their claim for pension credit and any other means tested benefits and they may all need to be repaid. It may be better financially to NOT backdate.
