sending ' signed for ' mail to HMRC

Does anybody know if a signature is still provided when mail to HMRC is collected from the Royal Mail depot at Wolverhampton ?

My understanding is that a driver from the Wolverhampton based company that scans mail for HMRC will sign for collecting a sackload of it from the depot.

Thanks.

Nothing is signed for any more and has not been since Covid changed the process.

Once it gets picked up it can be many months for snail mail to be dealt with. What are you trying to achieve, there may be other ways.

Thanks, I can understand how that might happen, but I did receive a signature in May last year.

It is usually just the Royal Mail guy scribbling on the scanner.

That might be it, although last year for myself it was confirmed as being from the EDM driver.

Save your money, just get proof of posting.

Even if you send signed for & it gets lost, you are going to send it again.

  • Hi sneedshelp, you're right about the EDM driver doing a bulk scan at the depot, which is why individual tracking signatures are so hit and miss for Wolverhampton.

Honestly, it's much better to just get a free proof of posting receipt from the Post Office counter. If HMRC ever claims they didn't get your paperwork on time, that basic receipt is legally accepted as proof that you sent it. Signed For doesn't really speed up how fast they scan it anyway, so normal post with a receipt is the safest way to go.

    Thank you both.
