CCJ overpayment
I cant find anywhere appropriate to post this, so please advise.
over 25 years ago, my wife got into some financial difficulties, and ended up with a ccj where she was paying £35/month. This was before I knew her,
Over the years we attempted to understand how much was outstanding, but could never find out,
Recently we concluded it must be paid off and finally (after many hurdles) discovered that it had been paid off over 4 years ago, so we were owed a refund.
We had been forgiving to Barclays as we believe they probably didn't have our current address, phone number nor my wifes married name.
Turns out they had had this all along, but had never bothered to write to her to say the debt was cleared .
Surely this is a scandal ? How can we get compensation and accrued interest ?

How was she paying - direct debit (a pull) or standing order/manual payments (a push)?
If they were taking a DD then you should complain and yes should get the money back + interest
If you were paying it e.g. via SO, they have no way to stop you sending the money and if you moved and didn't tell them, they would have limited ways to be able to contact you to tell you to stop, especially if the post was being returned as not known
You could try a formal complaint either way but unless it was a DD, I can't see you have a case when you didn't follow up with them to get the balance or chase statements - that doesn't mean they won't pay you something as go away money on top of the refund
Sam Vimes' Boots Theory of Socioeconomic Unfairness:
People are rich because they spend less money. A poor man buys $10 boots that last a season or two before he's walking in wet shoes and has to buy another pair. A rich man buys $50 boots that are made better and give him 10 years of dry feet. The poor man has spent $100 over those 10 years and still has wet feet.
