EMPLOYED BY COUNTY COUNCIL AND TAXED ON MY MILEAGE PAYMENT

Hi all new to the forum but need some advice, I work for my local county council and use my own car to visit local schools in my area, I put in a mileage claim every month but it appears on my payslip as part of my monthly pay which is taxed, how do I know if I am getting the tax relief on this and how to claim it back if I am not.

Thanks

Providing you are not being paid over the approved amount you will not be paying any tax on it. Have you tried to work out if the tax you are paying matches what it should be on your wages alone?

Is your local council generous with their milage rate?

If they pay more than the maximum tax free rate then you would pay tax on it (the excess above the tax free amount). And there wouldn't be any tax relief you could claim.

use an online tax calculator to see if the tax on your payslip is the same as the calculator when you exclude the mileage value

there are loads of online calculators to choose from

Your payslip should show taxable pay which should be easy enough to work out if it includes the mileage.

Just because it is on the payslip doesn't mean it is taxed.

As suggested do an online pay calculator without the mileage and see what the deductions are.
