Depends on the holiday. We're off to Palma for a few days tomorrow, with B&B at the hotel. Other meals will be a quick lunch on the go and out for the evening. If it was a gite holiday in France it would be self-catering mostly - breakfast from local bakery, picnics for lunch, and probably a roughly equal split between restaurants and the cottage for evening meals. All inclusive or half-board is a rarity for us, only if there was no other option. I think we have only done all inclusive once, in northern Finland. We were in the middle of nowhere - you either ate at the hotel or you starved.

It depends. A secluded cottage will mean self catering. A resort will often mean all inclusive - but we might go out for dinner or have lunch someplace. A walking holiday in the alps looks like half board but often included the right to pack a lunch from the breakfast buffet.

Food is part of my consideration in booking a holiday. A priority is doing what I can to stay well, so I prefer eating food I've prepared myself. So it is usually self catering. Sometimes we will eat out if the meals are something cooked well (no salads etc!), and we can dine outdoors. Additionally now, some family members need special diets so it can just be simpler to cook our own.

That being said, back in the day I enjoyed full catering in the hotel and having all my meals prepared.
