Hello fellow MSE'rs,
I've spotted a volunteer opportunity to go diving in Fiji for 20 weeks at a cost of £3800 plus flights, so all in just over £5k. Eeek!! But hey, it'll be a superb experience!
So now I have only 5 short weeks to raise 5 big ones, so far I'm not doing too badly, I've raised £166.98 on ebay with a few more items to go and I've managed to get a pay off from my previous employer worth £2280.26:T. Also got £250 to come from Quidco at the end of this month.
But that leaves me unemployed (details in another thread) with a big uphill struggle ahead.
So, who has the best ideas for raising the money? Should I start writing letters and ask companies for voluntary contributions since it is afterall a voluntary project? Is there any other legal ways of raising this amount of money quickly without getting a loan or putting it on the credit card?
Ideas are much appreciated!!

What exactly will you be doing while you are there, apart from diving?

Yep, just write and tell them you've volunteered to go diving in fiji and would they mind helping you pay for it. I'm sure they will be very generous.

It's a conservation project to secure the soft reefs of Fiji, so I will be integrating into the community educating them on conservation and helping to teach basic English. The main aim of the prject however is the fish & coral in and around the waters of Fiji.Treat others as you would like to be treated :A0

Dog walking, quick and easy! Go to the big houses would prob pay much more!
Carboot sales? I mean this is quick and easy way of obtaining the cash, although its cold and may not get what you want for you items...But every little helps!
Write to your local newspaper, tell them what you are going to be doing and make sure they add how much is costing and what you are doing to raise the money e.g clearing out your house and there may be a very genourous person out there!
Good Luck sounds awsome!0 -

Sorry to be boring but as a canine behaviourist I have to say there is so much more to walking dogs than people realise and it's really easy to get oneself into big trouble. Having had a dog doesn't qualify you to walk other people's and the likelihood is that the high paying ones either have very screwed up dogs (that they think are normal) or are sensible enough to ask about your experience, references and insurance before handing their precious one over to you. Not only are you taking care of a living being but as the law stands if a dog runs in front of a car and causes an accident, bites someone, trips them up, chases a cat in front of the car, is generally held to be a the cause of any trouble whatsoever, both the owner and the walker of the dog are held jointly and severally liable so you could end up in big trouble for a long time.
I hope you have a great time diving and helping conserve nature but I'm not sure that dog walking is the way to raise the funds
Don't forget to take your camera though and check out the selling your photos online thread before you go so you can raise a bit of cash when you get backa wombling we will go...0
