Barnet Council 100% tax surcharge for empty home

Hi All,

A relative in Barnet died recently and their home is being sold. It's empty at present.

Barnet Council have doubled the council tax charge because it's empty.

The bill is truly enormous.

Can we challenge this blatant profiteering by Barnet council?

If the property has been unoccupied for more than a year the council may charge an additional tax.

When did they actually die and how long ago was probate granted? There is an exemption where no CT is due from date of death up to 6 months after probate has been granted, so unless that 6 month period has passed there should be no CT to pay.

If that exemption period has passed what are the executors doing to get the property sold?
