My name is registered with wrong surname. Newlyn Enforcement
Hi Everyone,
I live in midlands and always have. However, my name is registered to a property in Manchester with correct first name but a different surname. I have contacted council various times to say that it is incorrect but they keep passing me to newlyn and newlyn is saying that as long as any part of your name is on the enforcement you have to payup.
I have moved my car but i have kids in the house and worried they might harass Infront of kids. any help will be appreciated.
thanks

Sorry forgot to add as i m really panicking about this who issue. The debt seems to be from 2021/2022 and it is 1800. The letter i received today says Control of Goods. Client: Manchester city council Arrears of Council Tax. Delivered by Hand.

That's a bit difficult to follow.
If you always lived in the Midlands, how are you linked to an address in Manchester?
How different are the surnames? Is it John Smithson versus John Smithsyn? Is it John Smithson versus John Brown?

it is John Smithson versus John Smithson Brown, so they have added a random surname to my full name. I am really not sure. either my details have been compromised or seems like they have searched credit agencies and the closest match they found was myself. The issue no one is willing to listen or do when i explain them. I have done it with council and newlyn and still adamant that i should pay up.

So just to be clear, you have NEVER lived or had any association with the property in question?

I know it might sound strange but i have lived at various properties when i was in Bolton University but never registered for council tax.

You haven't answered that question ….

Tell them you deny the debt and (hopefully) you can prove you were living elsewhere at the time. If you were a full time student at the time of the debt, that would be very much in your favour as FT students don't pay CT.
If you are genuinely not the person they are seeking, do not be bullied by Newlyn. Saying that "as long as any part of your name is on the enforcement you have to pay up" is a complete falsehood..
If you are querying your Council Tax band would you please state whether you are in England, Scotland or Wales1 -
Rise a formal complaint with the council. It is up to them to call off the dogs for their error.

You can take your complaint to the LGO.

Students only exempt from CT in a property of only studentsEDIT as it has been noted that is not wholly correct. Sorry for any confusion.
