Self Assessment Question

I could not find a category for HMRC or Income Tax.

Hi, I am in the middle of submitting my Self Assessment for 2025-26 period.

I want to get it out of the way because I had to pay on account over the last few years and I earned a lot less last year - HMRC is therefore overpaid and they owe me so want to sort it. They are always very quick to charge me interest but do not think that they will pay me interest on money I am owed.

I should note that I am paid monthly and have a company car. My payroll shows Monthly salary and Car Benefit separated out every month.

I have my P60 and final payslip which I have shown extract below (redacted)

I also have an extract from the Self Assessment form (redacted)

My question is that my P60 value shows my salary plus the car BIK value.

My final month 12 payslip shows my gross for tax to date which is just my salary and on the line above the total gross pay to date which is the salary plus the Car BIK. (Same value as P60)

On the P60 it states the figures marked * should be used for your tax return. This is the Salary plus Car BIK.

On the Self Assessment it says Pay from this employment - the total from your P45 or P60 - before tax was taken off.

Further down the Self Assessment you have to add the Benefits from your employment - use your form P11D.

If I use the P60 value in the 'pay from this employment' which is the Salary plus car BIK value and then enter the Car BIK Value in the Benefits area, the calculation at the end adds the two values together - effectively meaning the Car BIK value is doubled and then it shows I have to pay additional tax.

Is there an issue with just putting my salary in the pay from this employment instead of the P60 value. If I do this the tax works out correctly. Or should I have a word with Payroll to get P60 corrected?

With the greatest of respect you appear to have neglected to read the notes for your employment page. They are quite clear on this aspect of how to complete the return.

Why do you think your P60 might be wrong?

Are you even expecting a P11D for this employment?

And yes, HMRC do automatically pay interest on tax you have overpaid. This includes payments you have made towards payment on accounts that were due and then get reduced.

Don't forget each POA must be within a maximum of 1p of each other and any update to those will be made a few days after you submit your return i.e. if the return shows £800 is due then your POA will be reduced to £400 each (assuming they were more than £400 in the first place).

And the "Cutting Tax" part of the forum is what you were probably looking for.

Hi - Thanks for coming back so quickly. I will try and find the notes for 2026 to have a look what it says. In previous years when doing self assessment the values have been automatically populated for 'Pay from this employment' amount and Company Cars P11D. When I started to complete yesterday the values were blank. Usually I wait until the end of the year to complete so maybe because I am so early completing, HMRC has not updated yet?

My P60 shows the total salary that I earned plus the Benefit in Kind for the company car.

On the actual Self Assessment form it states to enter the total from your P45 or P60 for 'Pay from this employment'

Yes I have P11D for last year and one has been submitted for this year (2026/27 also). I still have the company car and am paying benefit in kind for it.

That will be a nice surprise if I get paid interest on my 'On Account' payments already overpaid. Thanks.

It seems very unusual to have a P11D for a tax year that is only just over a month old 😳.

I think you need to urgently check with your employer what they are doing. If your benefits are payrolled, which the P60 suggest is the case (and is quite normal these days) then they do not send you a P11D.

They are meant to send you confirmation of the benefits in writing, after the end of the tax year, but not on a P11D.

HMRC currently pay 2.75%, which is tax exempt. Rates are disclosed here,

Thanks again for the info. I will check with Payroll to see what is happening tomorrow. I know that there is a P11D this year which shows the car value is still £32,440 and the BIK charge is now 4% which is £1,622 per year.

This year the BIK went up from £81.10 per month last year to £108.13 per year. This is shown on my payslip and when added to my monthly salary is taxed after subtracting my tax free allowance.

Just had a look through the guidance notes - It just says to input the value from P60. There is no mention of subtracting the BIK value for company cars.

If you had P11D benefits, NOT payrolled benefits, you would get a P11D.

And presumably you would have urgently asked question sometimes ago now as to why your tax code was 1257L, which is an incredibly unusual code for someone with P11D benefits to have.

Is it possible your employer has payrolled benefits and for some unfathomable reason also issued a P11D.

And I can honestly say, for a company that is still trading, I have never heard of a P11D being issued this early on in the tax year. It seems utterly pointless given the figures on it will be wrong 1 day later!

I will enquire tomorrow with payroll. The company has had a some changes over the last few weeks. In April the internal accounts team were replaced by an external accountancy company. Yet to understand the impact although our payroll slips now look slightly different. Thanks again for your comments.

I am not an accountant but can calculate that I am paying the correct amount of tax every month My wage slip shows my salary on the first line and the company car on the second line. Tax and NI are deducted accordingly.
