SIPP help please

I had precisely that arrangement with my firm prior to moving from employee to partner status.
The main sponsored scheme was with SWID which I had no interest in joining, so they agreed that for my salary sacrifice arrangement they would fund my HL SIPP as well as divert their employer's NI savings and 5% contribution to my SIPP. It was a reflection of my value to the firm that they were prepared to accommodate me in this way.

It looks like in your case though the employer was actually operating a salary sacrifice scheme normally, but you had the money go to a different pension provider?
In the case of the OP, the employer apparently does not normally operate a salary sacrifice scheme, but is prepared to operate one just for this one employee. That is what sounds odd.
