Tax code 500t help please
My Husband has a zero hours contract with 1 company for around the last 18 months. This is very casual and has probably earnt around £5k with in the last FY. He had a pay slip in March for maybe £250 they had his correct tax code, and paid no tax.
In March he started a second part time job 22 hours a week, earning a little over NMW.
He was paid end of March for 3 weeks and yesterday for this month 4 weeks.
March he had a BR tax code and paid tax.
This month was his full hours and took home £1065 after paying around £165 tax, his tax code had changed to 500T.
He's won't be continuing this second employment, but will be paid 1 week notice and 1 week holiday pay in the May payroll.
He's due to be paid around £250 from his zero hours contract next week, pay slip hasn't come through yet.
He will most likely continue with only the zero hours contract for the next year, so is unlikely to earn enough to pay tax.
He's paid around £330 tax across the last and this FY with a fairly even split — how does he get this back?
Will his tax code 500T be applied on his zero hour contract so will he pay more tax on his pay this month? He may or may not get work resulting in pay in May.
Thank you, I don't believe I've ever had a tax rebate so no idea how this all works

Assuming he has no reason to need to file a tax return then HMRC will automatically refund any overpaid tax for 2025/26 in the next few months.
Once he gets his P45 from the second job he can call HMRC and explain he's now back to just the one job and it should be possible for a new tax code to be issued to the job that continues.
And any refund for this tax year could probably be sorted with a refund being made by that continuing employer. HMRC would send some specific information to them and it's sorted when they pay him next after getting the new tax code.

Thank you, that's really helpful - I'll let him know.
