You can get your state pension forecast here

    https://www.gov.uk/check-state-pension

With regard to your three pensions, the LGPS pension is a Defined Benefit Scheme and you are a deferred member.

You said that the other two arose from employment many years ago.

What do you know about these pensions?

If you wish to start a personal pension you have a wide choice of providers but it is possible that something like

    https://www.fidelity.co.uk/funds/retirement-builder/ might suit?

If your earnings for the year are £10,000, you could contribute up to £8000 and the provider would claim tax relief of £2000 and add it to your pot.

First well done, everyone needs to save up for their retirement and you're taking control.

Second, make sure you have details including contact details for the old pensions you have, keep them safe so when you retire you can claim them easily. Gov pension tracing service is on their website if needed.

Third, if your husband is a 40 or 45% tax payer, it's likely better to fund his pension instead of yours as pensions get you tax refunds and his refund will be much bigger than yours.

Fourth, for the amount you're thinking about saving the pension company you use won't make a huge difference, the costs vary but with small amounts it's not worth worrying about. More important is it's easy for you so you stick with it and save, monthly or ad hoc lumps the more the better (maximum you get tax relief on is your income though). If you are happy online there are loads you can easily find, MSE suggest a few. If you need help online then I would ask someone you trust like your daughter to help you get setup. You won't be able to get advice on small amounts like this as advice is very heavily regulated which makes it too expensive for small cases, so pick a simple online pension and go for it.

    Best of luck.

  • Thank you all for your advice.

@Brie I have done as you suggested and made a spreadsheet. I am up to date with my National Insurance and with 2 more years of payments will hopefully get the full amount. As for the others it's embarrassing! The total value of one of them is £677.90 and the other gives an annual payment of £885.98. Thank you for your advice regarding savings. We have some joint savings which are absolutely available to me to put into my pension. Also my husband has a pension in addition to his state pension which we will share. I just think that I should have a pension of my own that I can pay into.

I am no longer working in school @LHW99 but am self employed, working part time. I believe I have passed some of my personal allowance over to my husband already but I will check that. Thank you

Thank you for the link @Marcon I am working through it.
