I normally buy Tesco own brand of washing tablets and wash on 40 but decided to go for 30 but found traces of white on dark clothes. Do I need to buy Aerial which boasts of washing on 30 using this. I suppose it would be cheaper to buy their powder and use less electricity as price is going up (we changed to npower last year so will be hit first).

You could try...
Washing liquid instead
An extra rinse - should remove the powder
Have you cleaned the filter recently - is it possible the filter is blocked and not allowing the water to get out of the machine efficiently?
You could also try the recipes for home made washing gloop and powder on here

I also got white bits with persil on a 30 wash, so had to do extra rinses. Persil seems ok at 40 but ariel is the one that dissolves best at 30. I just had a thought: maybe try to dissolve the cheaper powder in hot water in a jug and then add it to the wash?0

OP, do you use fabric softener, this can sometimes leave a residue.
If you turn any dark items inside out and fasten a couple of buttons on shirts, this should help to prevent the problem.
Also it can sometimes occur when the machine has a bit too much in and the clothes are unable to agitate and rinse properly.
Gross, I know....but it may be bits of dead skin....cue vomiting smilie.
Edited to add......I just realised that you used tablets, these often don't dissolve at 30, especially if you machine is cold fill and heats the water itself.
I use stores own value stuff approx £1.41 for 3kg box, this is a fine powder and dissolves quickly.Official DFW Nerd Club - Member no: 203.0 -
I used to find that on a shorter wash I got residue on dark stuff (proabably didn't notice it on light things!)
Since gone onto Ariel powder, my cheap trial subscription to which? revealed it to be superior in many ways and I haven't been disappointed.
I also (more significantly perhaps) use MUCH less powder. I'm down to about 70ml.... well under half a measure. SOmetimes do the extra rinse if machine is on the full side. Went onto 30/40 degree wash every time when we had no hot water in the house (about same time as ariel use began) and have stayed with it. Sometimes do rinse hold and spin clothes on faster spin, as lower temp washes on my machine seem to have slower spin cycle[SIZE=-1]"Knowledge is knowing that a tomato is a fruit.
