Self Assessment - total income
Just submitted my 2025/6 self-assessment. I noted that my personal pension gross amount is shown in the HMRC calculation which takes me over the £35k threshold for total income (and hence questions about heating allowance claw back). I expected my total income to include what I actually received from my person pension i.e. after being taxed each month. Maybe I'm misunderstanding something?

Total income is your gross income before tax and NIC is deducted.

It also includes saving interest ( all of it, including the personal savings allowance part)

Total taxable savings interest is taken into account, so ISAs or any other tax-free or tax exempt savings should be excluded.

I had thought the same thing. I now know why I have been asked to repay. Need to find out how to opt out of winter heating allowance.
