HMRC Complaint: What Can I Do?

Do you use all your tax allowance with income from work / pensions ? If not any amount of savings interest, it is all taxable even if at 0% within the allowable bands, will be used to fill the gap. But it will be clearly stated what that deduction is.

It says it’s an underpayment in tax from a previous year, but I don’t believe I’ve underpaid. Is there any further way to find out why specifically they think I underpaid or is this where I need them to get back to me if I’m unsure?

Chances are it'll relate to the 2024/25 tax year - do you have access to your assessment for that year, either online or paper?

I’m a basic-rate tax payer, which I think means I get an allowance of £1000 per tax year (please correct me if I’m wrong). Outside of my ISAs I’ve at most earned around ~£120 in interest from any other accounts so I don’t think it should be related to that. I’ve tried to click through the account more and it says it’s an underpayment of Income Tax (apologies didn’t find this before)
I had guessed it was related to this before due to my lack of savings, debt, other income etc. and my only guess was two taxable workplace benefits, but I’ve checked my statements back to the start of my employment and I believe I’ve paid all of my tax on these.
Thanks for the help by the way

On my personal tax account for the 24/25 tax year the amount I paid and says ‘based on the information that HMRC have, £xxxx.xx was the right amount of Income Tax for you to pay.’

Have you checked earlier yers?

That’s the first year I became full time employed so didn’t have any income tax before that.
I’ve followed up on the complaint now by raising it to a second level as they haven’t responded by the time they said they would, hopefully that gets me a reply!

Have you taken the trouble to check your income tax situation for 2024/25 to see if there is some reason why you might have underpaid tax?
An overlap when changing jobs for example might result in tax being owed, or if you were provided with benefits by your employer, like medical insurance.
