Hi Joe, I have just called the NHS pension people and they say that if I leave within 2 years I have to transfer my NHS pension to a new provider. Do you know different? They said by transferring into the pension scheme it makes no difference as regards DB rights which you only get after 2 years. I look forward to hearing from you if possible.

That doesn't sound right. Please refer to the NHS pension website if you google it: https://www.nhsbsa.nhs.uk/member-hub/membership-nhs-pension-scheme

If you read the section under "What happens to a deferred member's pension"

If you leave the NHS Pension Scheme, your pension will be deferred if you have either:

    • more than 2 years of qualifying membership
    • less than 2 years of qualifying membership, but you transferred another pension into the NHS Pension Scheme

The last part is the one I am referring to. There are many sites that explain the same answer as well. Even the guide about transfering out also point it out.

Pretty clear-cut I say. Again, such information is easy to find.

I am somewhat concerned about the fact NHS pension people of all people doesn't know the answer to the most basic questions, especially when it may be the common questions from the new employees. Ask them to explain why it is the case when all information online and even the website and the official leaflets explains otherwise. I am not sure why you are calling them when you can see the relevant information about your pension scheme. But since they give you the wrong information, you could call them to clarify why you are have been given the answers and explain what so different about you that you have been given that particular answer.

Just to warn you, I am not a member of NHS pension scheme btw so the information I am typing out are from quick causal googling and general reading of this forums for a while.
