Solar and batteries
HHi,
Totally clueless on what a good system looks like.
I was thinking of going through my energy supplier.
We are a moderate to heavy usage, is this system good enough and decent kit?
Thanks

I'd hold fire until the rules change to allow 'plug in' solar which should shake up the market.

How much ? But I would say no, but that's my opinion of the kit and eOn

A few thinks to look out for:
- How much have you got to spend.
- MCS compliant installer essential.
- What direction (N, S, E or W) is your roof and how big sets how many solar panels. More the better not just for output but also for sensitivity in overcast days.
- Is you roof shaded by trees, building etc.
- Higher quality solar panels are around 850w each now.
- How much electric do you use a year and what is your maximum demand in kwh, to size inverter and batteries. Inverter size Kwh is a key component that if too low can bottleneck your system with lower battery charging rates and system output to run the house.
- Do you want the batteries to run your house if there is a powercut, if so you'll need a gateway.
- Do you have an electric car?
- Is you current consumer unit up to date, it may need changing/upgrading.
- Don't forget bird netting around solar panels. Quality is Solar Skirt.
- Premium brands like Tesla can be about £5/6k for just the battery and inverter + £600 for the Gateway

I don't think plug-in solar will make much difference, because MCS-approved systems are normally much bigger than will be allowed for plug-in systems.

This thread would be better on "Green and Ethical" where all the solar folk hang out.
Whether the solar PV is a good deal will depend on the price.
Whether the battery is a good idea will depend on how much electricity you use.
Paging @Screwdriva who might be able to suggest an alternative.

I would avoid the large utility companies for Solar - Eon, Octopus etc. offer low end brands from the far East at very high prices, often subcontracted for installation to the lowest bidder.
I'm not sure what £ you were quoted, but the installers I use to help others offer:
12 X Eurener 515W Bifaical panels (6.2kWP)1 X Tesla Powerwall 3 with Gateway 2 (13.5kW)
~£11K installed all inclusive. Bird netting, 10 year workmanship warranty and G99 included.
Hope this helps give you perspective!

It's worth remembering that Tesla (and some others) are supported by "Intelligent Octopus Flux" which is currently the best tariff from a financial view, for installations that will export more than they import.
