Expenses, self assessment and change in work circumstances with more time in the office
I am a contractor, use an umbrella company and complete a self assessment tax return.
For the last 5 years I have predominantly worked from home, and when required on site I have claimed the expenses for this on my self assessment tax return. In all cases, the site was far enough away to require an overnight stay.
I've just started a new contract, and this one is different. I'm required on site two days a week. It's much closer to home, so no overnights, and just train tickets for the days on site.
In the past, I could argue that my usual place of work was home, hence why I could claim expenses. But I'm not clear on what my usual place of work is now - and whether I can still claim expenses.
I don't want to commit tax fraud, but I do want to claim anything I'm entitled to.
Any advice? Thanks.
