Enviromental Health is a core part of the council. So they have told their own people to sort it and nothing has been sorted. They surely must be aware of that. I despair of public sector

I'm not sure people here can answer this based on the limited info given.

'their toilet area has been creating mess for a week' could mean anything from sewerage all over the floor, to a messy toilet.

Given that the Environmental Health have been in and have left it as it is for now, I would take a guess that perhaps it's not the major problem that would warrant someone walking out. But, of course, none of us know. Taking into account that this is all secondhand info, I'm going to guess again that as Environmental Health hasn't done anything about it, it's not that urgent and maybe not the disaster area that we're thinking?

If this was a serious problem I'd be thinking that Environmental Health would have closed the shop immediately.

Thanks for all the thoughts and pointers here.

EH expected action within 24 hours and for the problem to be cleared within 72 hours. By this point it had been a full week of the toilet floor area having sewage leaking onto the floor, coming up from the system.

What has turned out to be the more vulgar situation has been the way management have treated the concerns of staff. The store manager was more concerned about who the 'whistleblower' was and kept talking about how they would be in trouble. The area manager was telling my friend how head office were essentially*accusing* my friend of having called EH, given she had emailed Head Office about her concerns the same morning.

The whole situation was incredibly emotionally charged made worse by the disgusting smell and environment, that managers seemed not to care of. Shut the door and the problem is gone....!

Well. Whilst everything has been cleared up now, it's revealed the true priority of managers so I hope my friend will be able to escape sooner rather than later.

Thanks again for the legislative references and support.
