Between 3 and 10 months is a long gap.

It is recommended not to fly for 6 weeks after Op for short haul flight and 8-12 weeks for long haul.

You beat me to it. However I cant see why they can’t travel by car, with frequent breaks.

You can drive 6 weeks after surgery, so if they drove over they can drive back.

If it was my family I’d offer to drive over, there are clear benefits of recuperating in familiar environments.

I started driving again 6 weeks after hip replacement but kept it to short drives initially. I certainly wouldn't want to undertake a drive from France, unless it was near the ferry! after 6 weeks.

If it was complicated surgery that meant that the patient couldn't bend their leg or perhaps not at the waist that would make travel of any sort difficult. And while the travelling might be possible what about comfort breaks.

Not the same thing but when my OH picked me up at the hospital 3 days after my knee replacement the only place I could sit was in the back with my legs stretched out on the seat. And that was in a big and comfy car. Driving would have been impossible as it was my right knee so even though the car was an automatic I couldn't operate the pedals. And if it had been my left knee I couldn't have been able to sit with any comfort as the seat would need to be all the way back making it impossible for me to reach the steering wheel.

As you said it is not the same thing.

However, OP has not mentioned relative driving.

Of more concern is the possible 90 day limit of stay.

Longer than 90 days in France and you'll probably need some sort of medical visa or visa extension. If you pass 180 days in France you should investigate the tax situation.

And so we beat on, boats against the current, borne back ceaselessly into the past.
