Council tax band reduction

hi,

10 years ago I converted my garage into a bedroom en suite. I’d had life changing surgical problems and need this space for my medical management. I have 3 stoma bags. This was done under building regs as a disabled adjustment.

I’ve never applied for a band reduction because I’m worried the increase in bedrooms could negate any potential disability reduction. When I bought the bungalow it was sold as a 3 bed bungalow , now it has 2 beds ( which includes the garage conversion), a second sitting room and office so potentially 4 beds. Does this matter ?

Also I live in wales so not sure if the rules are different here.

Thank you

    You may be eligible for

    Disabled band reduction

This scheme reduces your Council Tax by a band if you or someone you live with is permanently disabled. You may qualify if you have:

    • enough space to use a wheelchair indoors
    • a room used by the disabled person, other than the bathroom or kitchen
    • an extra bathroom or kitchen needed by the disabled person

Disabled band reduction does not count as a benefit. It is not means-tested, so you can be eligible if you have savings

I don't know if the scheme applies in Wales though.

If you are applying for a normal band reduction, then if the alterations you carried out were prior to the last Welsh Revaluation, they will have to be reflected in the band

If you are querying your Council Tax band would you please state whether you are in England, Scotland or Wales
