Scotland - is the start date near a year end important?
Hello,
I currently volunteer for a local charity. I have now been offered a part-time job for the same charity but different position (I will continue to volunteer) and leave my current job on 26th March.
Start date has been pencilled in as 30th March, but there's a debate whether it would be better "all round" if my start date was either 1st April or 6th April. The charity's year end is 31st March.
Is it important please?

What did this debate cover as possible reasons why it might be better/important?

The issue I think is that you would start working before their year ends and before the tax year ends and therefore there's extra that needs to be done in both those and the new tax year.
So 26th March is a Thursday and so if you started on the Friday 27th they'd need to get you set up for this working year and work around the fact that they had missed payroll cut off for March. If you start 1st April March payroll isn't a problem but they'd need to log all the tax stuff for the 25/26 tax year.
By starting 6th April you are in one working year and one tax year and will get pro rated pay and holidays for April. Much easier to sort out.
Whether it's a bonus that you get extra time off between jobs (albeit with less money) is an issue for you to deal with.

Just to note the holiday year may not run from 1st April.

Is it important to you? If so, then ask the charity why they think it is 'better all round' to delay your start date.
Googling on your question might have been both quicker and easier, if you're only after simple facts rather than opinions!0
