She took early retirement and the higher pension, turning down the reduced pension/tax free lump sum.
Thus she had a higher pension than me as I took the tax-free lump sum which we spent.

It does say that it needs to be married or civil partnership.
However, it does say dependant’s pension which you may be able to apply. But it really depends on their definition, and frankly, you may not be considered dependant as you got your own income as well.
Ultimately, it really depends on the Scheme Rules. You are going to have to be prepared to be disappointed in this case. It is shame that research was not done properly and could have arranged this beforehand. :(
