Can recommend the civil partnership route, even if you're not fans of the idea of a traditional wedding. If you want to, it can be done by completing a few forms in front of the registrars. And immediately you'd have a combined £650k IHT allowance and can inherit between yourselves without using up any of it. No more of an imposition than the other official documents.
