That's not my experience - I got Class 2 solely by bring employed, and by working until about two weeks before I'd moved.
I suspect that the three month gap from June to September is what makes Laddie3 fall foul of the rule to have worked 'immediately' before leaving the UK.

That is simply not correct. There is no requirement to be self-employed abroad - you must simply be employed, self, or otherwise.
