SA and Simple Assessment interaction
I submitted a Self Assessment for 2024/25 on 24 January 2026 (I’m not normally in SA but filed to ensure correct figures after the Zopa reporting error involving ISA interest).
Despite this, HMRC issued a Simple Assessment on 10 February 2026 based on the incorrect Zopa data. It’s showing on my account with a 16 May payment deadline.
Has anyone had a Simple Assessment issued after filing SA? Was it automatically cancelled once the SA processed, or did you have to appeal? This is my first Simple Assessment, so I'm not sure how it appears online once withdrawn.

Was it automatically cancelled once the SA processed
Given you have already filed a return that really doesn't make sense.
In this situation your return takes priority but you will need to call HMRC to get the Simple Assessment cancelled.
Did you register for Self Assessment or just file an unsolicited return?

I previously filed Self Assessment for 2020/21, so I already have a UTR.
In November 2025 I received an SA250 letter confirming HMRC had set up a Self Assessment record for me. When I logged in, I could select 2024/25 in the tax return options and submit the return.
It's now showing:Tax year ending 05 Apr 2025Issued on: Not IssuedFile on paper by:File online by:Submitted on: 24 Jan 2026Received on: 24 Jan 2026
So the return was accepted and received, but it appears not to have been formally “issued”.
But no, I didn’t contact HMRC to register for SA 2024/25 - the SA250 letter just came on its own. Not sure whether this counts as an unsolicited return?
For completeness, my SA and Personal Tax Account are linked to different Government Gateway IDs, in case that’s relevant.0 -
Yes, that would be an unsolicited return i.e. HMRC have not either issued you with a return or sent you a notice to file a return (SA316 letter).
Did the SA250 letter make any reference to a tax year(s)?
You need to call them to get the Simple Assessment cancelled. Self Assessment always has precedence and allows HMRC to investigate the return if they see fit.
And great that you have shared a screenshot, it 100% makes it simpler to follow what is happening 👍

No, the SA250 letter didn’t mention a specific tax year. I had originally planned to resume filing from 2025/26, but because of the Zopa ISA interest reporting error, I decided it was sensible to file for 2024/25 as well.
Following your advice, I contacted HMRC. They confirmed that my 2024/25 return was voluntary, but they have now cancelled the Simple Assessment. Thank you very much for your help!

Did the Simple Assessment actually include the ISA interest Zopa had reported in error?

Yes, unfortunately it did. The untaxed interest figure shown matches the BBSI breakdown I obtained earlier, which included an overstated amount from Zopa equal to the ISA interest I received.
