  • Have you checked correspondence your mum has had from DWP? I have just looked at my mum's latest SP uprating letter dated Jan 26 and at the bottom of the third page is a paragraph which informs that the SP is taxable and if taxable income is above the relevant Personal Tax Allowance there may be income tax to pay.

I have only kept the first page of previous letters so I'm not sure how long this particular para has been included. So your mum may not have had such specific communication but unfortunately by law individuals are expected to take reasonable steps to be aware of such things.

Just makes me so angry as she was never informed about needing to put money away or do a self assessment.

I've just checked with a retired friend who sent a screenshot of the attached extract from their 2025 increase letter (and who confirmed the same statement is included in the 2026 letter):

These are individual letters and really couldn't be clearer, which rather undermines any complaints that someone 'wasn't told'. They were sent the information, but if they didn't read it…

Googling on your question might have been both quicker and easier, if you're only after simple facts rather than opinions!
