Job Boomerang advice - for promotion
Hi all,
Looking for thoughts
Left a job after 9 years, finance sector, left as a Deputy Manager of a team. 3rd member of the team to leave specifically because of the manager, no other issues with the work/company as a whole. Made known to me she is now finally being "phased" into another role so manager position will be available. New job is the same role with competitior, got a good payrise pay and less stress/work load so it was a no brainer.
Only been 3 months though, so not a huge amount of time in new role, but enough to know it will take me 2+years to work up the company/client knowledge to be able to progress to a similar manager level role, whereas stepping into that at old company would be a breeze comparatively and (if accepted) would be an immediate career/pay boost.
However, it feels awkward to contact old company to discuss after only three months, like i'd be desperate and they could try to low-ball me etc, but also the same to the staff if i did get the role, like walking back into a company people when i had a pretty big send off and a big deal was made just seems embarrassing.
Any thoughts to put me off, or the opposite and good experiences, tips how best to approach the old company and pbhrase any introduction etc?.
Ta!

I'd just be very wary of a 'difficult' manager still being around... Especially if they'd be senior to you, and you're taking over their role.

I'm a Civil Servant, was frustrated in Department A (which was otherwise a great place to work) left on promotion to Department B. Department B was not as it turned out the kind of place I wanted to work (for many reasons), and the promotion was work that was less challenging than the work I did in Department A...
I decided after 3-4 months to seek another promotion, applied to a few different Departments, but the first job I fancied and got was back in Department A - I rejoined about 9 months after leaving. People were generally delighted to see me return to a job two grades higher than the one I left.
However, I'm not one for big leaving parties, I prefer to just slip out quietly and I wasn't returning to the team I'd left.
Personally, in your shoes I'd only return if the manager had actually left the company. As they're still around, you'll either need to reset the relationship with someone now at the same grade who is the reason you left, or will find they're still more senior than you.

As others have said, I'd also be concerned about moving back to the previous employer if that manager was still there. There is nothing to prevent that person being promoted and ending up managing the OP again.

How was it "made known to you" about the poor Manager being manged out of role?
