Help for somebody job hunting with ABH conviction

It is somewhat of a colloquialism referring to it as "fail", but you both seem to be arguing semantics.
ABH is not something that "could easily happen after a few beers and a disagreement", pretty much everyone has had a few beers and a disagreement, very few people end up with an ABH conviction.

Being in a job, particularly something sensitive or complex like GCHQ and then getting a sentence is potentially something fairly different to being an external candidate with a criminal record.
There is certainly a hierarchy of offences, a well known case in my circles is an Actuary who was suspended from the Institute for 5 years for murdering someone. He got a life sentence with a minimum 23 year term so the suspension really was a bit of a moot point but by comparison someone who claimed some expenses for a trip that they didnt take got a fine for £10k, pay costs of £9k and also expelled from the institute and not able to reapply for at least 5 years.

The person working for GCHQ had the convictions before they applied for the role and the clearance.
The guy who got the conviction whilst working for the company I was with at the time wasn't in quite as "sensitive" a role.
They were up front about it when applying for the job. It did help that they had skills that were incredibly rare (and ironically still are, as the system they're an expert is used by very few organisations).0 -
Actually, ABH is easily the kind of thing that could happen after a few beers.
Have a look at the definition.

A Culpability C Cat 3 starts at a Band B fine (100% of weekly income).
Lesser Culpability:- No weapon used
- Excessive self defence
- Impulsive/spontaneous and short-lived assault
- Mental disorder or learning disability, where linked to the commission of the offence
1, 2 or 3 are easily a "Drunk pub" incident.
