I have only recently started receiving the SRP and the savings interest is recent too, after an inheritance.

Fair enough, but, as above, you'll presumably be paying tax from this April rather than April next year?
However, as pointed out in another post, it'll generally still be worth transferring the marriage allowance until both are earning over £12,570 (excluding savings, etc).
Edit: to clarify, you'll have a tax liability for 2026/27, even though it won't actually be paid until after that.

Does the starting rate for savings income not apply ? giving me a £5000 allowance

It doesn't affect taxation of non-savings income.
